Probation Fees Article

The New York Times has an interesting article today about the outsourcing of the justice system for misdemeanor offenses by "economically strapped" towns and cities across the US.  According to one person quoted in the article, this privatization has occurred due to "growing pressure on the courts to bring in money rather than mete out justice.”  The article goes on to explain that this privatization of the justice system for midemeanor offenses has led to "mushrooming" fines and fees "levied by money-starved towns ... and the for-profit businesses that administer the system."  The end result has been "growing numbers of poor people ... jailed and in debt for minor infractions."
